What is lacquerware? What color is lacquerware?

Hello.
This is KOTO KYOTO.

Thank you for contacting us again this week.
Among the inquiries we received, there was one question: "What color is this box?"

For those of you who are curious, I would like to give a brief explanation of lacquerware.

Lacquerware is created using lacquer obtained by processing the sap from the trunks of lacquer trees. It is then applied in multiple layers to the surface of mainly wood and paper. Since the lacquer is applied repeatedly, it may look uneven, but the actual color is basically black, although vermilion is also available.

Painting with lacquer has the advantage of increasing durability, water resistance, heat insulation, and antiseptic properties, as well as enhancing insect repellency.

Lacquer is used not only as a paint but also as an adhesive. For this reason, it is also used in the traditional technique of "kintsugi" to repair broken bowls and plates.

Recently, "Kintsugi Classes" have been held where you can learn how to repair important items by yourself under the guidance of instructors.

If you are interested, we can also introduce you to Kintsugi classes.
Please feel free to contact us.

I hope you have a fun day today too.
